Meet the crew!
Artistry in Steel since 1983.
Philadelphia-based Bilenky Cycle Works (BCW) was founded by Stephen Bilenky in 1992. Bilenky started in the bicycle industry in the mid-1960s as a shop rat and eventually owned a repair-oriented bicycle shop in Philadelphia called the Bike Doctor. Bilenky started building custom bicycle frames in 1982 with Sterling Cycles. Today BCW produces about 100 framesets a year; retrofits bikes for S & S couplers (a hardware system by which frames can be taken apart for travel); repairs frames; and builds forks, racks, and stems. Bilenky is renowned for his fillet brazing. BCW is one of a handful of select bicycle builders for the Rapha Continental east coast team.
BCW’s breadth ranges from show-quality beauties and stout tourers to lightweight racers out of the newest steels, tandems, half recumbent/half upright viewpoint tandems, front-racked porteurs, and freight bikes.
BCW’s aesthetic sense is as broad as its range. From fluid fillets to purposeful TIG welds and the fanciest of hand-carved lugs, BCW does it all. BCW is a frequent award winner at the annual North American Handbuilt Bicycle Show.
BCW hosts an annual urban cyclocross race in the junkyard abutting BCW's workshop in the Olney section of northeast Philadelphia. Off the bike, Bilenky is the bass player for the Notekillers, a “power punk” instrumental trio.
