A Way In: Jewish Mindfulness Program

A relatively new development in Judaism, Jewish mindfulness combines meditation and movement with Jewish story and symbol to help us cultivate moment-to-moment awareness. It calls us to be where and as we actually are right now.

Many techniques that are used to promote mindfulness -- both meditation and movement -- are adaptations of Buddhist practices. But Jewish mindfulness also draws on traditional texts and the teachings of the medieval mystics.

Among the “ways in” to Jewish Mindfulness are spiritual practices particular to our tradition, like observing Shabbat or kashrut. Teachings that grow out of the cycles of Jewish time also can provide entry points to practice. While Mindfulness deliberately focuses intention to the present, without drifting into memories of the past or plans for the future, it often leads to changes: in our bodies, minds, hearts, and in our perspectives. That in turn may deepen our commitment to tikkun olam, “repair of the world.”

All teachings and interpretive scripture translations are by Rabbi Yael Levy, founder of A Way In. For more on Jewish Mindfulness, see our website: http://mishkan.org/a-way-in

A Way In, a Jewish Mindfulness program, offers opportunities to deepen moment-to-moment awareness through meditation and movement practices that are grounded in Jewish texts, tradition and time.

The program is guided by Rabbi Yael Levy, whose approach to Mindfulness grows out of her deep personal commitment to spiritual practice and a passionate belief in its potential to change not only individuals but the world.
